One Room Challenge – Week 2 (Bathroom Remodel)

ORC2-HEADER

Hello Design Lovers,

Last week I announced that we are participating in Better Homes and Gardens’ ONE ROOM CHALLENGE. If you need to catch up on last weeks post, you can find it HERE. The blue bathroom is getting a massive makeover!

This past week I have been finalizing finishes and securing items from our amazing vendors. I decided to approach this challenge just as I would any project with a client. As you saw in first week, we started with a floorplan and a mood board. Once we decided that’s the direction of the design, I started gathering samples and finalizing designs. This includes creating conceptual 3D renderings of the space. When working with clients, this is the favorite part of the presentation because it really helps visualize the space.

ORC2-Finishes

Shower tile –  I chose a large scale gray tile from LEXCO Tile & Stone that has a little bit of texture and in a certain light shows a slight shimmer.

Wall tile – This is another large tile from LEXCO Tile & Stone There is a misconception that for small rooms we need to choose smaller tile. I actually think that you can create bigger impact with bold moves. This could be achieved with large scale or bold pattern . This tile is plain in color but has wavy texture that will be a great backdrop for our mirror and sconces. It will be like a waterfall in the background!

Floor tile – This bathroom has an outdated ceramic tile. The floors under the tile are heated and it is nearly impossible to remove the tile without damaging the heated floor. It is a hydronic heat that uses hot water to radiate heat to the surface. When we removed the tile in another area of the house one of the pipes burst and there was black water gushing all over our brand-new drywall. I think you get the idea…. We need to keep the tile, but we have a way around it! I worked with my friends at Floor Coverings International and we found a great product by CORTEtec. This is a version of LVT (luxury vinyl tile) that has actual tile specs in it, so it feels and looks like a real tile. We will use this product to go over the existing tile. It will lock in place and will be a floating installation so the heat can come through and the room will be nice and cozy. The design of this tile is gray with white marbling through it. I cannot wait to see it on the floor!

Countertop – I chose this white quartz with gray veining from Terrazzo & Marble Supply Companies Visiting their showroom in Menomonee Falls was so wonderful! There are so many natural stones to choose from. We will install this countertop wall to wall without a 4” backsplash to achieve a clean look and because we have the tile behind the mirror, it will be kid friendly.

Lighting and Plumbing Fixtures – These Kohler fixtures are a great pop of contrast for this neutral bathroom. I wanted a dramatic yet clean statement and matt black was the way to go. When researching the fixtures I discovered something new. KOHLER has lighting!!! They have a boutique collection of lights that are perfect for bathrooms. These sconces are going to light up the room – quite literally!

Vanity – with all the other finishes being the cooler tones … I wanted the vanity to be warm toned wood. I worked with my K&B designer friend Denise Merbeth and chose a Siteline vanity in Alder Sandpiper finish. It will create the necessary warmth to make the room inviting. We also ordered matching floating shelves to go above the toilet. The toilet is located in it’s own little cove, so I wanted to make sure every area has some design attention.
